But Sofia was on top of the heap\u2026 the absolute worst of the worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strong-willed and independent for a five-year-old girl, Sofia thumbs her nose and sticks her middle finger at authority with a sneer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What adults ask her to do, she will often do the opposite\u2013just to show how willful she is. But I have found a way to make her to surrender her usual stubbornness\u2013<em>by promising her a surprise<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever I fly in from Malta to see her in Munich, I&#8217;d bring a pack of Twistees. It\u2019s a Maltese original\u2026 a kind of snack you can usually only find in Malta. Well, you can buy Twistees in Germany but they&#8217;re kinda shit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike with his mom, Sofia would be extra nice to me. She&#8217;d do anything I ask her to do, like fetching a beer or playing me a jingle on her kid piano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because she knew\u2026 if she behaved well, Uncle Fredo would reward her. Sometimes, I\u2019d give her a pack of original Maltese Twistees. Other times, I&#8217;d reward her with different things\u2026 Maltese nougat, a piece of Gozo cheese, or a miniature toy bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, I\u2019d hide the reward somewhere and get her on a treasure hunt at her mom\u2019s barn in the outskirts of Bavaria. It\u2019s crazy how much trouble she\u2019d go through for a small snack or a toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I don&#8217;t wanna toot my own horn here, but I guess it&#8217;s fair to say I&#8217;m Sofia&#8217;s favorite uncle. But they are willing to suspend their stubbornness when you promise them a surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And guess what? <em>This childish habit sticks with us even when we have grown up<\/em>. We all want to think of ourselves as independent and strong-willed. However, we may sometimes surrender our stubbornness if there\u2019s a surprise and a reward if we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you know what?
