Sit down, dear reader, and stay a while. Today we\u2019re going to hear the story of Colby and Spencer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Colby\u2019s own words:<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember it was a Thursday night. I decided to go out, go downtown, hit a bar or three. Maybe grab some tacos. Just another autumn evening. Or so I thought.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was at this bar-slash-pool-hall-slash-outdoor-lounge called the Pale Pony\u2014that was the first time I ever saw Spencer.<\/p>\n

\u201cTall, wavy platinum hair\u2014natural, by the way\u2014and eyes like a summer sky. Soft features, button nose, and lips the color of roses in bloom.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo racism, man, but she was like some kind of Aryan goddess in a red cocktail dress.<\/p>\n

\u201cNaturally, I was way too chicken to talk to her. I\u2019m good with girls, but not that<\/em> girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cI figured, she probably got approached by every guy everywhere she went. Brushing dudes like me off was probably second nature to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t stop me from checking her out all night, though.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went back the next week. She was there again. And the week after. And the next.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlways with her girlfriends. Never with a guy.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, I couldn\u2019t take it anymore. I\u2019d seen her and her party shooting pool more often than not.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I braced myself with a little liquid courage. And then I went over and invited them to join me in a game of nine ball.<\/p>\n

\u201cLong story short, we made plans to meet up there at the Pony again the next week.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat second time is when I got her phone number. Then we started seeing each other outside Thursday night, in places other than the Pony.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me just say, the past two years have been the best of my life. I thought I\u2019d been in love before. But being with Spencer, that totally redefined what I understood as \u2018love.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to be with her all the time. I wanted to share everything with her. The joke I made up in the shower. The headline on page three of the paper. Everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was my first thought in the morning. She was the last thing I saw when I went to sleep at night.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter what else happened, it was absolute bliss<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Too Good to be True?<\/h2>\n

Well, I\u2019ll say this: Colby’s relationship with Spencer sounded fantastic.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was actually a little jealous. I know the thrill of meeting the perfect person. Of becoming infatuated. Of falling into a wonderful life together.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019ll also say this: Colby wasn\u2019t sitting in my office because his relationship with Spencer was all roses.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then she just left you?\u201d<\/strong> I asked him.<\/p>\n

He nodded, looking more than a little overwhelmed. I passed him a box of tissues, then busied myself looking for something on the bookshelf behind me.<\/p>\n

After a moment or two, I turned back, set a certain book on my desk. Colby had composed himself, but still clutched the tissue in his fist.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was a while ago, wasn\u2019t it?\u201d I asked him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. Just like that, she lost interest in me<\/a>. And it\u2019s been months, and I just can\u2019t get over her. I can\u2019t stand to go drink or shoot pool at the Pony anymore. Or any of those other places we used to go together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d I said, \u201cbut have you tried dating anyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. Sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just not interested. She\u2019s all I can think about. I need to know how to save this relationship<\/a>. I can\u2019t get into anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause they\u2019re not her.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He nodded again, wiping his nose with the tissue.<\/p>\n

He shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay. What\u2019d you do after that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, the usual stuff<\/em> you\u2019re supposed to do to get over someone.<\/strong> I talked about it with my friends. I went out to new places. Tried writing poetry to express what I was feeling\u2014get in touch with myself, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I know. Let me guess\u2014none of that has done the trick, has it?\u201d<\/p>\n

He silently shook his head.<\/p>\n
