But they taste way better when you\u2019re master of your own domain.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re lucky, you are the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>dominant<\/strong><\/span> member of the relationship\u2014as you should be.<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re unlucky\u2014well, I truly feel bad for you.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s still <em>hope<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Listen up, because you need to pay very careful attention. What I\u2019m going to tell you here <strong><em>will<\/em><\/strong> change your life.<\/p>\n\n<h2>The Controlling Girlfriend: A Lesson in Female Tyranny<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Bear with me, because first I want to talk about Herman Melville\u2019s novel <em>Billy Budd<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Billy is a civilian sailor on the ship <em>Rights-of-Man<\/em>. One day, his boat is stopped and boarded by the British navy. Billy is forced into military service.<\/p>\n<p>As he\u2019s taken away, Billy looks back sorrowfully. \u201cGood-bye to you too, old <em>Rights-of-Man<\/em>,\u201d he calls.<\/p>\n<p>One tedious and very depressing novel later, Billy is falsely accused of conspiracy. He is executed by hanging.<\/p>\n<p>The end.<\/p>\n<p>Whoa. WTF does that have to do with anything?<\/p>\n<p>Well, the plot of <em>Billy Budd<\/em> is an analogy for the controlling girlfriend.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s navy is a kind and gentle one. The British navy of Melville\u2019s day was straight-up <em>authoritarian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Sailors had very few personal rights. So few, in fact, that many had no choice about joining the military. They were basically slaves.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, the royal navy demanded total <em><strong>obedience<\/strong><\/em>. Nothing more, nothing less.<\/p>\n<p>If you didn\u2019t like it, you were punished <em><strong>severely<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you were even declared a mutineer.<\/p>\n<p>And then you died.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, maybe it\u2019s not a perfect metaphor.
